As well as running our own projects, BASH has been actively involved other community, arts and heritage events.
Here are some highlights:
Canterbury
Cathedral Caen Stone. Members of BASH took part in a heritage project organised by members of the community and
Parish Council of Fordwich. A delivery of genuine Caen Stone was transported from France for restoration works at Canterbury
Cathedral and made its journey via the original medieval route. Members of BASH and medieval musicians Rough Musicke greeted the Caen stone on its arrival at
the Quay in Sandwich on 26th March 2011. A crowd of residents and visitors witnessed the ceremonial greeting
of the stone by the Mayors of Sandwich and Fordwich. The stone was then transferred to a barge, which carried it along
the Stour to Fordwich. A week later, the stone travelled by heavy horse and cart from
Fordwich to Canterbury, accompanied on foot by BASH members, Rough Musicke and dignitaries from the towns. The event
culminated in a service in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral.
Coastguard Historical Food Festival. Members of BASH attended the Historical Food Festival at The Coastguard
Pub, St Margaret's Bay, in September 2010 and 2011. BASH tents graced the site, and our offering included authentic
medieval cookery displays, medieval costumes and period puppetry from The Theatre of the Small.
- Herstmonceaux Medieval Festival. Members
of BASH and Rough Musicke appeared at the Herstmonceaux Medieval Festival in August 2010. Sandwich giant John Drury took part in the grand parade. BASH's encampment provided
entertainment throughout the day, and the band played for the festival's finale party.
- Sandwich Medieval Fayre.
BASH supported the establishment of the first Sandwich Medieval Fayre, which took
place at the Delf Farm Shop in the summer of 2010. BASH's period tents made a striking sight on the field and members
of the group could be seen providing entertainments throughout the weekend.
- Makey
Do. BASH supported local artist Jenny Wills' weekend
community craft project in July 2009. The event took place in the Guildhall, Sandwich. Members of BASH hosted craft
stalls and workshops during the event - and helped to eat the many cakes on offer in the tea room...
- Leeds
Castle. BASH held a weekend encampment at Leeds Castle, Kent in June 2007. As well as providing entertainments,
the group hosted a Giant Wedding featuring Sandwich giant John Drury, and took part in parades around the castle site.
